History of Andorra. Part 1

Andorra is a dwarf European state, located in the Pyrenees, a sovereign principality that dates back to the time of the Carolingians. Due to its geographical location Andorra has always been connected to Spain and France, which have always respected its independent status.

Historians traditionally believe that the founder of Andorra was Charles the Great, known as Charlemagne, from the Carolingian dynasty, but people have lived there since ancient times. Andorra’s independence has been known since its foundation, and one of the reasons for the establishment of the state by Charlemagne was protection of the empire from Arabinvasion. Because of its long isolation and sparse population, Andorra cultivates some original traditions such as power-sharing in within the president of France, the Catholic bishop of Urgell and the Parliament of Andorra, one of the oldest European parliaments, – the General Council.

he first settlements on the territory of actual Andorra date back to 13000 BC, the Neolithic Age. The first inhabitants of Andorran valleys left back some traces of their seasonal camps: flints and harpoons in Santa Coloma, cave paintings, especially in Ordino and Canillo. During the excavations archaeologists found processed flint and ceramic debris which can be attributed to 4500 BC. In Sant Julià de Lòria there are some archaeological sites of the same age, for instance Feixa del Moro, which along with the Tombs of Ordino represent Neolithic necropolis in the form of a dolmen as an example of the urn culture in Andorra. Around the dolmens scientists found different objects, such as pieces of jewelry and stone knives. During the Bronze Age the tribes were present in these territories as well. Based on the found traces of forging, it can be confidently stated that at that time metal was used on these lands.

For the first time, the inhabitants of the Andorran valleys were mentioned in the texts of the historian Polybus in the 2nd century BC. The author refers to the Andesine tribes and mentions the Hannibal's passage through the Pyrenees. The Roman Empire influenced Andorra as well: Roman coins were found in ancient sanctuaries around the country and Latin is known as progenitor of the Catalan language, the official language of Andorra.

The great invasions of Andorra began in the 5th century: after the fall of the Roman Empire Andorra came under the influence of the Visigoths. The Visigoths from Narbonne conquered Andorra in 414 and only in 714 were driven out by the Arabs who remained there until 785, when the Franks took full control of the region.

In fact, Andorra was created in 788, in one of the fights against the Arabs. According to the legend, Charlemagne founded Andorra in recognition of the help provided by local people in their fight against the Saracens.

Then the grateful future emperor declared the Andorrans "sovereign people" and granted them a charter of freedom. It is hard to understand how Andorra became independent because the real history is mixed here with legends. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that Charlemagne made Andorra part of the Spanish Marches. In fact, these buffer territories protected France from new Arab invasions.

After the Arabs left the land it became possible to completely reconstruct the Cathedral of Santa Maria d'Urgell. In 839, at the day of its consecration, the Andorrans of six parishes (Andorra and Lòria, Canillo, La Massana, Encamp, Ordino and Santa Coloma) swore an oath to the Bishop of Urgel. In the 9th century Charles the Bald, Charlemagne's grandson, named Count Sunifred I of Cerdan-Urgell suzerain of Andorra. In 1133 Ermengol VI, a descendant of the count, gave his lands in Andorra to the diocese of Urgel, in 1186 the Andorrans accepted a new suzerain and swore an oath to the bishop.
