Andorra: brief geographical description, transport and how to get there

Andorra, or more precisely the Principality of Andorra, is a small so-called dwarf state, which is located in the South-West of Europe, between France and Spain, in the eastern Pyrenees. Compared by territory to other microstates in Europe (Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Vatican, Monaco), Andorra holds the second place, just after Luxembourg. The Principality of Andorra is the sixth-smallest state in Europe, having an area of 468 square kilometers. Andorra has no access to the sea, but both the French and the Spanish Mediterranean coastlines are less than 200 km away, and it takes not more than 2,5 hours to get there by car. Moreover, you will reach the ocean in only 4,5 hours drive.

Due to its interesting location high up in the mountains, at the moment Andorra has neither airport, nor railway. In 2019, for the first time in Andorran history, an airport project was presented and there is a chance for an airport to be built in the country. At the moment it´s possible to enter Andorra by car/bus or by helicopter from Spain or France. However, there are several international airports not far from Andorra.

Spain:

  1. Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), 570 km and 5,5 hours drive from Andorra
  2. Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), 200 km and 2,5 hours by car or 3,5 hours by bus from Andorra
  3. Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO), 200 km and 2,5 hours by car from Andorra
  4. Reus Airport (REU), 200 km and 2 hours drive from Andorra
  5. Lleida-Alguaire Airport (ILD), 150 km and 1,5 hours drive from Andorra
  6. Andorra–La Seu d'Urgell Airport (LEU), a small airport 15 km away from Andorra; it is possible to fly only to several places from there: Barcelona, Madrid, Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza), Lisbon, Toulouse

France:

  1. Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS), 170 km and 2 hours drive from Andorra
  2. Carcassonne Airport (CCF), 150 km and 2 hours drive from Andorra
